Wall crack, water damage, building defect: increasingly, large expert groups — and some insurers — offer to « take your appointment by video call ». A few minutes on camera, an operator asking you to point your phone at the problem, and there is your « report ». A time-saver for them. For you, it is often the first step of an under-assessed claim.
What a video call cannot see
- Behind and underneath: a crack that goes through, a hollow-sounding wall, a vibrating floor — these are probed and measured, not filmed;
- Hygrometry: a wall that « looks damp » and a wall at 85% moisture are the same picture and very different claims;
- The cause chain: shrinkage crack or foundation settlement? The difference lies in fine readings and structural understanding — invisible on video;
- Context: every house is different — age, materials, soil, works history. A survey methodology exists precisely to miss nothing. A camera has none.
Technician or expert: the question to ask
In these video setups, the person handling your case is rarely a court-appointed expert — usually a call-centre operator working from a script. Their conclusions feed a decision grid: reduced compensation, cause dismissed (« normal ageing »), file closed. Recovering afterwards is possible — but from far behind.
How to push back
You can demand an on-site expertise — especially for structural disorders, significant amounts, or when the video concludes too fast. An independent expert report, with measurements and methodology, becomes the reference of your file: neither insurer nor counter-expert can swipe it away. And if needed, it supports the second expert procedure before the court.
